Christiana: Governor’s Budget is More Realistic Starting Point
HARRISBURG – Rep. Jim Christiana (R-Beaver/Washington) today issued the following statement following the governor’s 2018-19 budget address:

“Obviously, this a re-election year for the governor, so it’s a time to heal some of his wounds from the past three years. He has realized the public has rejected his tax demands, so we are left with a much better starting point for the 2018-19 budget process.

“It’s important that government spending does not outpace the rate of inflation, but assuming our revenues at the state level keep meeting expectations and the Trump economy continues to surge, I think it’s realistic that we can achieve a 3.1 percent growth in our economy. That means the 2018-19 budget wouldn’t require any of Gov. Tom Wolf’s proposed tax increases.

“I was happy to hear the governor recognize the need for workforce development initiatives. We continue to see students graduating with high levels of debt and a degree that is not tailored toward a local job or not graduating at all. If we want to keep some of these high-paying industries in Pennsylvania, we must have the proper training and programs available to prepare our citizens for jobs in these fields.”
