Rep. Jim Christiana (R-Beaver), in response to today’s announcement that the Beaver Area School District is seeking to merge with a neighboring school district, issued the following statement:

“The Beaver Area School Board’s decision to study merging with a neighboring school district is an idea that I enthusiastically support. Proactively seeking to merge the Beaver Area School District with a surrounding district exhibits big-picture thinking and unselfish attitudes.

“Merging school districts would allow for a consolidation of resources which would ultimately lead to lessening the financial burden on area taxpayers. The time has come to put our hard-working families first. Given the choice between consolidation and another tax increase, I believe most people would choose consolidation.

“In the face of tough economic times and declining revenue, we need to take bold steps in ensuring our children continue to have access to high-level, sustainable educational opportunities. Merging school districts would accomplish this.

“Make no mistake, consolidating school districts will present us with new challenges. And I will join our citizens in facing these challenges. In the end, I have no doubt this will make our communities even stronger, while preserving a high standard of education for our students.”
