Picking Winners and Losers Is Wrong Way to Improve Pennsylvania’s Economic Climate
In what was a spirited debate on the House floor this past Tuesday, Rep. Jim Christiana (R-Beaver) stood in opposition to legislation proposed by House Democrats, House Bills 2399 and 2401, that would funnel hundreds of thousands of additional tax- payer dollars into programs. Christiana’s opposition stems from Pennsylvania’s history of spending money on these types of programs with little, if any, positive results.
“I stand in opposition to this legislation for several reasons,” Christiana said. “It repeats the vicious cycle of borrowing millions of dollars from hard-working Pennsylvania taxpayers for handouts to programs with a proven record of failure. Cardboard checks and picking winners and losers is no way to improve Pennsylvania’s economic climate”
Christiana instead cites reducing the Commonwealth’s high tax burden as one of the ways to improve Pennsylvania’s economic climate.
“Pennsylvania ranks second in the nation in economic development spending,” Christiana added. “Sadly, we rank near the bottom of the list when it comes to job creation, personal income, and population growth. Legislation that calls for pouring good money after bad into programs that are ineffective, at best, is another example of the wanton wasteful spending taxpayer dollars, and I will not support it.”
